Kyra Halpenny

She is passionate about self-expression (in her writing and photography), global awareness (fed by repeated exposure to life outside the US), and the ability to unite people through common interests and goals. Kyra participated in a Global Glimpse trip to Nicaragua and has been actively involved in the organization ever since. She also led a bullying awareness campaign in her community. She believes in the power of kindness, and that the quiet make the most noise. Kyra intends to use this adventure to broaden her world perspective, and allow her to become a more thoughtful global citizen. She also feels this program will give her the opportunity to continue to convey her thoughts in her chosen mediums - writing and visual.

10/24/2014 For the last two months my stomach has demanded of me that I go in search of sushi, chicken wings, and pizza. All of which have been possible, except sushi which is rare, but in Dakar it is not impossible to find. The Caesar’s restaurant chain specializes in wings, and pizza is common because...

8/22/2014 – Alliance Redwoods Campgrounds We will soar and we will fly, We must spread our wings and take to the sky. From our flight, We will discover a new found sight. Our minds will grow And our imaginations will expand. There will be sadness though, With happiness these emotions go hand in hand. Our...

11/27/2014 Feet sink into the wet sand, The waves crash against my legs as I walk collecting shells in my hand. Beautiful, colorful, each its own kind, Of all sizes and shapes that nowhere else I would find. Each with their own stories, All took a different path, I am sorry I cannot recount their...

Washing the Day Away

Here in Ndande, showers are a fickle thing. For starters if you want to have an ‘actual’ shower with water pressure you must to wake up between 5:30 and 6:45 in the morning. After 6:55 almost everyone in Ndande is using their faucets and spigots – if not for filling the large water barrels –...

Dakar, Senegal – September 29, 2014 Something another Fellow said during In-Country Orientation has stuck with me. It was while we were riding snugly fit in a taxi, driving down the multi-lane highway that runs along the beaches of Dakar into downtown. We passed another taxi – not an uncommon thing, however, it looked incredibly...

Ndande, Senegal – October 20, 2014 A note to all those who love watermelon: Fruit here is a luxury, so when it is available it is cheap in the beginning, but as the season comes to an end, the prices increase, as I saw happen with the mangoes our first month in Dakar. Here in...

July 31, 2014 – Elko, NV, United States For as long as I can remember I have been a traveler. For the last week my papa and I have been making the trek from Saskatoon, Canada to Fremont, California. Before that I drove the west coast to British Columbia, and that is just what I...
