25 Jan 2018 When It’s All Over

When it's all over
When it's all said and done
I'll say
I've been to Senegal, but I've never been to Africa…
I'll say I've been to four bedroom "maisons" adorned with roses and palm but never any huts.
To Sahara deserts but never any Safaris.
That the only lions I saw were the wild kind…
The kind that clean entire houses with roaring cubs strapped behind their backs cook lunch after coming home from school walk two miles to get an education
That I've been to Khombole not Lagos
Not Cairo
Not Nairobi.
When it's all over I'll make it very clear that you can never know poverty never know racism never know colorism until the day you're brave enough to shake it's hand
Until the day you begin to look at it for what it is and not what you've romanticized it to be…
That every place contains the magic you've so desperately been searching for in the Ivy Leagues
In the banks
In the smug cubicles you call the world.
But you had your eyes closed.
But you had your mind closed.
When it's all over I'll say I've been to Senegal, but I've never been to Africa
Because a continent as diverse as Africa can never be seen can never be felt never be loved never be understood for what it really is without eyes hands hearts minds that are willing to embrace it…
When it's all over
When it's all said and done
At least I got to love you
At least I got to say
That I've been to Senegal.
