Los Manos

Hands are a great indication of the work we do and types of life we lead. “Los manos” is also a term used to describe workers, often times those who work in the field. It dehumanizes people, creating the image that these people are born to serve one purpose: to labor all day in the hot sun. They are not capable, or rather, not entitled to more opportunities in life other than physical labor. With this project, I took pictures of people’s hands and them working in the field, creating with their hands. While it will depict them doing the very work that is generally stereotyped of local people, I think it will humanize the term “los manos.” Yes, these people work; they can work hard. However, they are not just machines generating statistics of productivity and efficiency. They are workers who labor to create. They have stories. They are also humans.
