December 17th. Açaí, suco de cana, pão de queijo…

Hi!

Halfway through, so many things to be thankful for… but today I’m going to share with you a bit about food and how it has been a very important and delicious part of my experience. Some new things, as the açaí, the pão de queijo and suco de cana, some food I’ve made from home as well as even some Chinese food we prepared some days ago. No better way to do it than showing some step by step and some other captures of the tastings.

Hola!

  1. Suco de Cana

It was one of the very first and very new things I tried with just a few days of being in Brasil. Nicely refreshing for hot days in ‘centro’, or at the beach. Sugar cane juice with a bit of lemon juice that helps it to be just perfectly sweet.

  1. Pão de Queijo

For breakfast, or actually any time of the day. From the bakery or my host mom's attempt to make it at home. Other days I will buy some in Super Chico in the Lagoa de Conceicão and then go and sit in front of the lagoa and watch the sunset. Warm is better because the cheese may be melted and soft. Big or small ones, could eternally eat this cheese bread.

  1. Açaí

I’ve had the chance to live with Erasmo who is an agronomist and agricultor, who cells different products in the Saturday morning fruit market in ‘centro’. And fortunately, one of them is açaí. We have some palm trees at home that I have been able to see growing, still don’t have ripe fruits but I’ll make sure to share when they do.

-Erasmo besides selling the already proccesed product, he also cultivates the seeds and the day he showed me where, I also discovered how much of a breathtaking view there is from just beside our house.

-I’ve learned how to prepare it and have been also selling some to fellow fellows since it is a positive business for multiple reasons- support the local producer, healthier and with no added sugar, you’ll pay much less than in most shops and have much more and a better product! -Here how easy it is to prepare it: get your ingredients (acaí, granola, banana), put it in your blender and that’s it!

-Really good to eat by itself, or with a ‘misto quente’ (very common grilled ham and cheese sandwich) and also a good excuse to get together with some fellow friends and host family!

  1. Gallo Pinto

I prepared Gallo Pinto this past weekend! For the first time and after three months, I found some rice and beans and as nostalgia is starting to hit a bit, I decided it was the day to make some food from home. It is a Costa Rican typical dish. Here also some steps to how to prepare it: get your rice and beans, start by adding some oil and onion to your pan, add your rice and beans, mix them up. Very important ingredient ‘Salsa Lizano’ for a great taste and smell. And finally, you can cook some eggs and get some bread and cheese and tortillas and make a feast with eat. It is typically eaten for breakfast but it can perfectly be in any of your meals.

  1. Tortillas

It has indeed been a journey with this one. It consists of a corn- flour-made, rounded and flat pancake, but between the first tries and replacing and finding the best ingredients it has also made me realize how much I miss corn, plantains and potatoes in my diet. Nevertheless, I have been introduced to the amazing cassava in its many different forms. And I’m mastering the art of making tapioca which is basically a cassava tortilla, very delicious too. Temperature and time, you don’t want it too hard neither raw because it can be powdery; consistency and fillings, very versatile in the end haha

  1. Dumplings

Finally, this last weekend I got to visit Dereck and join him and Rebeca, both fellows, to make dumplings. Which is like a Chinese wheat-flour empanada. Veggie or with meat, very interesting intentional combination of flavors. Worth the effort to make.  I have to say I’m very happy to say I’ve learned how to make them and looking forward to do them back home too. In the end I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of the finished ones.

To be honest, there are so many more things I’ve tried that have become a part of me in the figurative and even the literal way. I believe food is an amazing way of connecting with people, of observing and attempting to understand their ways of living and even share a bit of yours. Sometimes it is emotional soothing and some others a part of joy and celebrations. Brasil has been a whole culinary experience, I have found some restaurants I really like also, Have had to cook regularly for my self and so experiment a lot, but i definitely enjoy a lot more to cook and eat with people. As part of my daily nourishment, looking forward to eating, experimenting and learning more and more!
