Being Different

I have always been one to take the road less traveled. Ever since I was a little girl picking bikes over Barbies and cameras over clothes, I’ve never quite been able to squeeze into the little space of the ordinary. When I was a small girl I began thinking to myself… “Why be the same as everyone else when I can be…different?”

My name is Holli Jean Sullivan. I have had eighteen years of unforgettable adventures and lessons learned, and all these have seasoned and prepared me for one experience that will take everything I know about life and turn it into something that I cannot even fathom at this point. College is going to be around ‘til the end of time, but eighteen only lasts so long. These years are so important in the growth process of not only me, but my entire generation. While I have complete and total respect for all things collegiate, I realize that unless you really are certain about what you want to do, it is really a bit of a holding tank–somewhere to go when you truly have no clue where to go.

I have been raised to think for myself. I worked out all the thoughts and decisions I have to make at this point in my life and was able to decide that the best option for me right now is to see the world. To open my eyes to new cultures, new languages, new people. To experience something that will allow me to still practice my passions of photography, music, and traveling. I have had many people question me, telling me perhaps this isn’t the best move because it just isn’t conventional. With all due respect to their opinions and ideas, maybe I am just not very conventional either, or “of traditional design” as the dictionary puts it.

The world needs help. Every day it seems to fall apart a little more, but every day it’s people like the ones at Global Citizen Year that rebuild it right back up again. I want to have that experience, to be able to make a tiny little difference in one or, hopefully, several people’s lives.

My name is Holli Sullivan, and I could not be more stoked about this incredible opportunity to work with Global Citizen Year. If there’s one thing I know for sure about this adventure, it’s that it is not going to be anything that I expect, and to me, that is so exciting. I know this experience will help me grow in ways I can’t quite imagine, and I cannot wait to be impacted, changed, and inspired by this fabulous program.
