And the more than five pieces fell into place for starters

And the more than five pieces fell into place for starters.

It feels like a clumsy way to start a blog about one’s adventures abroad by just starting a blog about one’s adventures abroad. But I guess the only way to get started is to just begin. So.

I’m sitting here on my bed in my dorm at Stanford University, listening to my brain digest all that it’s received in the last week. And not at all least is it juggling with the fact that I am soon heading to a flight that will shrink the time difference to home but is of course not home – that would have been way too easy. At the same time the brain is full of doubt; it makes me wonder if I should rewrite this first blog post ever because now that most of Global Citizen Year’s Pre-Departure training is over all I’ve planned seems way less profound and sophisticated than I wanted. But through a path or another it comes to the conclusion that I shouldn’t, because the following is a true representation of my thoughts during the summer before leaving here. So, here we go.

Puzzle Piece 1. Soon I will be, again, even further away from home than the hot air balloon in this photo. Understanding and internalizing this very thought has been a crucial part of this summer’s agenda. The picture was taken at the Pyynikki Observation Tower in the city of Tampere in mid-August.
Palapelin pala 1. Kuva on otettu Pyynikin näkötornista Tampereella elokuun puolivälissä.

Piece 2. I had an insane amount of work (okay, I admit I’m exaggerating a little bit here, but still) to do for the summer. Some of it I managed to get done, sitting at this beautiful inspirational milieu that my farm home offers, and some of it I just – more or less consciously – left for a better time which I hope will once reach me.
The most important things – the ones I had to prioritize over everything else – had of course to do with “GCY”. Global Citizen Year, the program that has in these last two months become my present and my future, my challenge and my solution.
Pala 2.

Piece 3. I flew to Spain in the beginning of July with my mother and my big sister. The trip was a refreshing and welcomed break between all the “Finnishness” of my home country, Finland. While I think Finnishness does not mean only boring, grey and cold, but also clean, functional and cozy, I still always find traveling abroad fun and exciting. I am, after all, one of those people whom standing in one place for too long bores to death; to whom movement is essential indifferent of its direction.
And the South of Spain was, with no doubt, a fantastic direction to go. With all the swimming pools, the sea, the sun with its rises and sets; the warmth and the way cars would stop just to allow me to cross a road. As an extra pro, this trip allowed me to practice wearing a hat – a skill that I can guess will be rather useful in Senegal!
Pala 3.

Piece 4. I graduated from the Mahindra United World College of India, aka MUWCI, already in May this year. However, we celebrated my graduation at home only two weeks back, because I received my IB results only in July. It was relieving to finally get done with everything related to high school – now I feel like I’m free to move on with my life!
The difficulty with coming back home and trying to explain the UWC experience or to answer questions like “Well, how was India?” is everything. I mean, it’s practically impossible to answer those questions in a way that would do justice to what I got to experience. And I’m not talking about only the good things here, but also the bad things that maybe pushed me to grow or maybe just scarred me for life. This is the main reason I felt a distance of kilometers between myself and all of my guests – they could never see all that I saw, even if I wanted them to. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I still have a lot to think through myself too.
Explaining Senegal and Global Citizen Year and basically my whole life has arisen questions and suspicions and words of worry – even more than when I left for India, if possible. My family and friends have been particularly doubtful because of my inability to tell them any solid information about where I will be living and with whom and what I will be doing. But although I don’t agree with all the statements I’ve heard lately, realism is just as important as mere support – and it keeps me from being overly excited about what’s coming!
Pala 4. Pääsin ylioppilaaksi Mahindra United World College:sta, lyhyemmin MUWCI:sta, jo tämän vuoden toukokuussa.

Piece 5. This is where I was supposed to add a picture of myself with wet hair after jogging in the rain and brag about the fact that I went jogging even in the rain. But after losing that photo I decided to replace it by these ones from my bicycle trip with my dad on the last day before leaving. Although jogging would have been a more accurate representation of my hobbies, biking tells a story of a fear and a childhood trauma I have recently overcome to push myself out of my comfort zone: I fell down while cycling so many times as a little girl that I did’t dare to even look at a bicycle for about ten years. Last summer, though, it finally struck me how ridiculous I had been, and I just decided to face this fear. And well, cycling is actually a lot of fun, I admit now.
Pala 5.

And so the pieces have all been put together, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, all combined into this more or less nice and neat puzzle I made. Well, the message I guess is what matters here: after all of these things being in her mind or in her calendar during the summer, Armi is indeed now ready for the adventure that is waiting right around the corner to wrap itself around her.
