Oakland, California – Global Citizen Year (en.globalcitizenyear.org), a non-profit social enterprise forging a new educational pathway for emerging leaders, is pleased to announce a new gift from philanthropist Shelby Davis that provides $1 Million to the Global Citizen Year Scholarship Fund.

The multi-year investment will enable 40 graduates of the United World Colleges, a system of international high schools working to create a more peaceful and sustainable future, to participate in Global Citizen Year’s unique, pre-college bridge year.

Historically, international travel, exchange and immersion opportunities have been luxuries, accessible only to those who can afford to pay significant fees. Shelby Davis’ generous support enables Global Citizen Year to continue making our program accessible to the best young leaders we can find – regardless of their financial circumstances.

Global Citizen Year is unique among other programs in our commitment to selecting participants who represent a broad socio-economic spectrum. In our five-year history, Global Citizen Year has provided:

  • over 80% of our participants with need-based financial aid, and nearly 30% with full scholarships
  • nearly $5 Million in need-based financial aid to over 300 young people

“Shelby Davis is a visionary philanthropist who shares our guiding mission: that meaningful, international experiences change the lives of young people who, in turn, change the world,” said Abigail Falik, Founder and CEO of Global Citizen Year. “We couldn’t be more grateful to Mr. Davis for his generosity and commitment to the movement we are building.”

Through this ground-breaking partnership, Shelby Davis, the United World Colleges and Global Citizen Year join forces to broaden access to life-changing global experiences – transforming the pipeline and perspectives of a new generation of leaders.
