Senegal Health & Safety Coordinator

The Health and Safety Coordinator (HSC) works with local and global program staff to provide critical support to Fellows, by coordinating: health and safety incidents, communication with families, systems for risk management and awareness, and implementing emergency protocol. The HSC will report to the Country Director and work closely with the Program Manager and Team Leaders.



Implement country-specific risk management training modules for stakeholders and provide timely incident-specific coaching for staff and Fellows.

  • Stakeholders include: Staff, Fellows, Fellows’ Families, Host Families, Apprenticeship Hosts, Local Advisors and Language Teachers.
  • Serve as a “trainer of trainers” in preparing and organizing necessary training/documents/equipment/supplies for all local stakeholders and staff.

Health and Safety Systems

Coordinate Global Risk Management strategies, to serve in-country context.

  • Support overall risk management culture with the cohort and team
  • Manage the Emergency Hotline system
  • Lead in-country liaison with Global Citizen Year’s international insurance provider
  • Oversee and support the in-country Incident Reporting System
  • Understand and help uphold policies, protocols, guidelines, and tools associated with risk management
  • Support the Country Director in building partnerships with In-Country risk management networks, i.e. the US Embassy, Peace Corps, the Red Cross, USAID, peer organizations, and other relevant government and non-governmental organizations.

Emergency Response

Support in-country staff in Emergency response. Key activities include:

  • When on emergency hotline duty, carry a 24/7 cell phone and remain within cell service at all times
  • Support TLs in providing response and care to Fellows, as needed.
  • Keep Country Director and Program Manager informed of relevant information related to ongoing emergencies and proactively involve Country Director and Program Manager for critical decision making

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fluent in French and English.
  • Position is based in Thies with regular travel (sometimes overnight) around operating areas
  • Ideally Wilderness First Responder level certification and/or advanced training in risk management with a minimum of Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Experience in implementing risk management systems, ideally in an international setting
  • Proven ability to apply systems thinking to risk management
  • Proven ability to work under stressful conditions during time-sensitive incident response
  • Working knowledge of Senegal and local communities
  • Systematic and detail-oriented: Able to document and organize information quickly and systematically, with an eye for detail without losing sight of the bigger picture.
  • IT systems capabilities: Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Salesforce a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Command of Wolof
  • 2+ years experience working with or supporting youth/young adults in remote settings, including responsibility for assessing and managing risks, and prioritizing the health and safety of a group
  • International program experience: Direct personal experience participating in and, ideally, leading education programs abroad.
